Learning to train your voice for singing is like any other physical exercise. You must practice it to learn and become proficient at it. Singing does take some aptitude for being able to hear a note and being able to duplicate it with your voice. But to train your voice you will have to have some stamina in your vocal cords.
You need to train your voice to develop power, pitch and endurance to your voice when you sing. The objective is to be able to hit the note directly without having to slide into it to find it.
Train Your Voice Like Any Other Muscle
To train your voice you need to develop the right muscles. Since the vocal chords are muscular in nature, they can become tired and out of shape. There are various exercises that will help to strengthen the vocal chords and condition them so that they become more durable.
Initially, you can train your voice by doing the natural range exercise. Sing the note that is your lowest note that you can hit with a la. Then hit the highest note that you can reach, without going into a falsetto. Do this several times and you have just established your range. If you have a piano find the note on the piano on both ranges and find out what these notes are, even if you have to look them up. This is a great way to start to train your voice.
Train Your Voice By Reading
Believe it or not you can also train your voice to sing by reading aloud sections of newspapers, books or stories. Record the sessions with a tape recorder. Listen to see what you might do to clarify your speaking quality. Do you slur your words, or speak to softly so no one can hear, do you mutter and mumble. Make note of what you feel can be improved, and practice correct pronunciation and sentence structure.
Train Your Voice By Singing
Start to sing along with artists you like. Just let it rip. Sing until you get tired. It is a great way to train your voice. Let your full voice come out, until you have confidence that you can project and hold the notes. Learn the phrasing that the artist is using to emphasize certain areas and pauses, lead-ins and endings.
Try singing in various moods. Make your voice smooth, rough, louder, softer, silly, etc, until you find a range that suits you. Find out what ranges of notes you are stronger in and how the artist gets into those areas.
When practicing you can sing do re mi fa so la ti do move it up the scale as high as you can go then move it down the scale again. Try singing Mommy made me mash my m&m’s, moving up and down the scale.
You will learn to train your voice by doing these simple things over and over. You will gain command in your voice and will be able to easily get to the notes you are required to get to with ease. When you hear the artist on a recording effortlessly reach that high note and hold if for a time, it is not just luck that he or she was able to do that, their practice had a lot to do with that. You need to train your voice the same way.
Next, in order to continue to train your voice, work on adding a little bit of vibrato to your singing. Vibrato is that little wiggle in your voice that makes a song interesting to the ear. It does not need to be too much, but enough to make it heard. Vibrato is done be changing the intensity of the vocal chord on a note, usually at the end of a phrase or a song.
Practice these things and you are on your way to having fun as a singer as you train your voice.
